Facilities

Our Managing Warden Ellen Cloete and her family live on site in the separate building and will meet guests on arrival to introduce you to the facilities and answer any questions you might have.

Accommodation

We have 5 dormitories, named after some of the tenant farmers who once worked here. In the main house there are 4 dormitories:

  • The Tyson Room – 10 bunks

  • The Richardson Room – 8 bunks

  • The Birkett Room – 4 bunks

  • The Kirkhaugh Rooms – 4 bunks each

The Colebank dormitory is at the west end of an indoor corridor and has 14 bunks.

All bunks have a waterproof mattress, however, you will need to bring your own pillow and sleeping bag/blankets.

Catering

A fully equipped kitchen is available for self-catering abilities with:

  • A double sink and separate hand wash basin

  • Stainless steel work top

  • 2 gas cookers

  • Catering grill

  • Pots and utensils

  • Large fridge and separate large freezer

  • BBQ outside (bring fuels and utensils you may need)

Ellen can provide a catering service if required. You can select which meals you require, including breakfast, lunches (packed or plated), evening meals or barbeque, and desserts. At least one weeks’ notice is required to organise this to assure accommodation to tastes and dietary requirements. Meal prices start from £5.50 and desserts from £2.50.

Glass, plastic, and cans must be taken with you on departure. Paper, card, and combustible waste can be used in our boiler, so we provide a bin for ‘burnable’ rubbish. All other waste can go into bags in the ‘non-burn’ bin to be taken to the refuse collectors. There is also a compost bin outside the kitchen for organic waste (fruit, vegetables, etc.).

Indoor Facilities

Dining

There is a dining room above the kitchen which seats up to 40 people on 5 tables with bench seating. There are picnic benches outside also near the barbeque. All cutlery, crockery, tea towels, scourers and washing-up liquid are provided, with a double sink and drainers for washing up.

Living

The main house has 2 lounges with log fires. The small lounge has a closed wood-burning stove and is carpeted, and the larger one has the original stone flagged floor. There should be enough logs and kindling for your entire stay around the property, however if you need more feel free to ask and we will order more in for you with an additional charge.

Washing facilities are along the indoor corridor. There are separate male and female toilet/shower facilities which were completely refitted in 2015. We have a separate accessible toilet and wet room facility for disabled access, baby changing, or for staff or leader use.

There is a washing machine available to use and a heated drying room.

The barn is a large multi-purpose space that is available for gentle indoor games. There is table tennis and a dart board which can be supplied by request. There are coat hooks, hangers and boot racks in the barn for your outdoor gear and very wet clothing. The upper mezzanine floor is not available to visitors.

Telephone

As Low Gillerthwaite is situated in an extremely remote area, there is little to no phone reception, meaning you will not have access to the internet or texting. Phone calls can be made using the payphone we have which is open for public use. It can receive incoming calls on 01946 862899 but cannot take messages. To make an outgoing call remember to bring 20p, 50p or £1 coins.
